The Art Director Chooses...

I have a hard time understanding sometimes why art directors choose the art they do. And sometimes I submit several versions just because I like a different look, and then offer them the choice.
I almost always know what will be chosen, but I keep on sending different things just because. I have my own ideas of what looks best, but then, it' isn't up to me, at least for now.
Which of these would you choose?

Elise, I'm a fan of the first. For me having the child filling the space, is like having the child's happiness filling-up inside her. There's barely enough room for more!!! The cheeks and shoulders really say it.

Oh how I LOVE your work Elise! So tender and joy-filled.

I agree, though I'm not sure why. :) But she looks super happy in the first one slightly less so in the second. I think the space, and the eyes look a little more squinty. (Which, of course, I equate with joy.)

I like the second one better. I like the perspective the background gives, and the simplicity of the details and coloring. But I'm no artist.

At first glance, I like the second. But further thought would make me consider what the book was about before I chose. The first would seem to fit in an older childs story; the second for somewhat younger kids, perhaps because of its simplicity and much bolder lines.

Like you say in your post, you often know what the AD will choose, most likely because of your past experiences. No reason to stop sending in multiple versions as that puts different styles in front of that AD. And no use trying to figure it out. I have had similar experiences when designing advertisements for clients. I have my idea, but the client has another. It is all subjective. As long as the client is happy, you have done your job!
